Millennium Hotel Mayfair and Tanya Baxter Contemporary will launch ‘The Journey Begins,’ an exhibition of new work by the prominent Burmese artist Min Wae Aung. One of Myanmar’s most celebrated artists, Min Wae Aung is exhibited and collected internationally. He is best known for his stylized paintings of Buddhist monks in vibrant colours that convey a sense of calm; leaving humanity behind and going to “a peaceful place, like Nirvana.”

We gave Min Wae Aung his first solo Min Wae exhibition in 1999, having visited his studio in 1998 in Yangon and Inle Lake; I was overcome with a sense of aesthetic Purity that emanated from his works. Min Wae Aung is a practicing Buddhist and his paintings depict a very integral part of Buddhist life, which is all about the simplicity of their life. He captures their daily journey, people with few resources, who depend on themselves to live and suffice on what they have.

As an artist and an individual, this is part of his personal quest to be non-materialistic in life and minimalist in his paintings. Min Wae uses the classic motif of the traveler as a starting point for his new series of works. Everyone depicted in the paintings traverses through life by foot. Min Wae paints with detail and methodology. He adopts a bold expanse of colour, a minimum of fuss with brushes, but through his clever build up of golden hues, he gives us a feeling of the heat and dust along the roads, the monks and nuns are depicted in scorching reds, pinks and oranges. The colours are intense, black and white being used as a shadow and highlight. He has achieved an uncompromising monochromatic palette of either red or yellow which gives a life like quality to the people in his paintings. Step by step we see an artist who has fastidiously followed his passion and soul of Buddhist life and celebrated the people.
