RHED – ‘Personae and Portraits’ is this emerging artist’s second solo show with Tanya Baxter Contemporary. In this collection of works, Rhed is moving away from the informal, colourful, perhaps chaotic compositions seen in his earlier show to structured, more intense figurative works in a more muted palette. ‘Personae and Portraits’ runs from Tuesday 14th July until Monday 3rd August showcasing 18 of his new works.

Rhed, currently a student at The Royal Drawing School, and previously at Central St Martins, seems to have been following Picasso’s advice to ‘Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist.’ He has moved away from his previous expressionist, narrative driven works to find inspiration amongst a small group of family and friends, as these intimate, honest perhaps brutal portraits illustrate, with a nod to the School of London artists Rego, Bacon and Freud.

“One to watch. Or more than that. He may still be raw youth but capable of the extraordinary. Boy Blue, Shoulders and Forgotten are outstanding portraits now. The demon descending the staircase in Steps of Life is for me a masterpiece.” Godfrey Barker former Art Market Correspondent for the Daily Telegraph, the Evening Standard and the BBC

“Since Rhed’s first solo exhibition at the gallery in 2018, he has matured as a painter. Modestly he believes he is only in the early stages of a long artistic journey and he is in no rush… The path ahead looks full of promise.” Hilary Binks, Art Critic

“Good artists are those that turn energy into something beautiful that resonates with the eye. Anyone can be a painter, but it is a question of making other think, and provoke feelings.” Lord Davies, Former Chairman of the RA

“Rhed’s paintings are beginning to develop a confident style, there is a boldness in his palette and brushstrokes that depict a more assured artist.” Oisin Fanning, CEO San Leon Energy

Tanya Baxter comments: “I am intrigued as a viewer, there is no doubt that Rhed is beginning to unveil a sense of who he is as a painter, there is a more cohesive feel to the compositions, and the works are emotive, personal and intimate…Rhed is painting very honest characters that are part of his close artistic setting.”

COVID 19 social distancing will be strictly adhered to with a maximum of ten people per floor of the gallery. Masks will be provided, there will be disposable champagne flutes and hand sanitiser upon arrival. Please kindly note, there will be no restroom facility.
