Following from the success of the recent ‘Banksy on Tour’ exhibit at Heathrow VIP, which preceded a record-breaking auction season for Banksy, we present a never before seen collection of photographs from the renowned art and culture nightclub AREA, NYC. Images of rock stars, artists, pop icons and celebrities taken by photographer Ben Buchanan offer a glimpse into a fleeting, pivotal moment in time.
Buchanan was the official club photographer at AREA, an art-themed and installation based nightclub which was the after-hours beacon of the avant-garde in downtown Manhattan between the years 1983- 1987. Smaller, with a shorter life span, and much more exclusive than Studio 54, AREA was the de facto place to be if you were lucky enough to gain entrance. Through Buchanan’s keen eye we are invited in and we are given unique access to the private lives of many familiar faces. These intimate and compelling images offer a rare glimpse into a world that very few saw or experienced, and the series presents a time and place, before the ubiquitous social media phenomenon, that has a magic quality, one which we are still celebrating today.
