Callum Innes, born in Edinburgh in 1962, is a leading Scottish abstract painter renowned for his innovative techniques involving both painting and “un-painting”. After studying at Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen, and Edinburgh College of Art, he developed a distinctly reductive approach marked by the use of turpentine to remove pigment, notably in his celebrated ‘Exposed Paintings’ series. Innes was shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 1995 and won the Jerwood Painting Prize in 2002. His work is held in major public collections worldwide, and he continues to live and work in Scotland.
